THE
ISSUES
Stuttering
(also known as Stammering) refers to speech in which
the rhythm is interrupted by blocks or spasms, repetitions,
or prolongation of sounds or syllables. It
is sometimes accompanied by loss of eye contact, facial
contortions and head jerking as speakers struggle to pronounce
words they know but are unable to say.
This
is associated with feelings of shame, embarrassment and
loss of self esteem.
Covert
Stuttering refers to attempts by the speaker to hide
their stuttering through use of filler words, word substitutes
and circumlocutions.
It is important Covert Stuttering behaviors be recognized
so appropriate treatment can be arranged.
